Already underway this month of May and for the rest of 2024, Britishinitaly.com will be asking you to consider supporting and sponsoring the fundraising efforts of The Rotary Club of Edinburgh for young carers beginning with the Challenge For All 2024.
As members of the British community either permanently resident in Italy or with your time split between the UK and Italy, we would like to ask for your help to support young people who are entitled to a childhood and to discover their potential but who often go unnoticed or unrecognised whilst caring for a family member. The recent Covid lockdowns and economic challenges have placed these young people under increasing stress.
The Rotary Club of Edinburgh have created a “Challenge for All” which has kicked off with a challenge to being active every day in May, boosting personal well-being whilst raising funds for Edinburgh Young Carers through sponsorship and donations.
Members, family, friends and colleagues are walking, running, cycling, swimming, rowing, wheelchairing, zimmering, kayaking , canoeing and even trout fishing to raise sponsorship funds to help the young carers.
The Support of the British community in Italy is very much appreciated.

What is a Young Carer and why should we be supporting them?
A young carer is somebody between the age of 5 to 25 who cares for or is affected by someone else at home – usually a parent or sibling – who suffers from condtions including mental health problems, disability, drug and alcohol misuse and chronic ill-health. They need and deserve support!

Most young carers go unnoticed or unrecognised, until there is a crisis
Caring responsibilities can affect a young person emotionally because they are putting other peoples needs first. This can result in being worried, anxious or stressed. Feelings of guilt, anger, being trapped, isolated and misunderstood.
Physically
Suffering from pains or strains from heavy lifting oo helping someone to wash or dress.
Socially
Not able to meet up with friends regularly, feeling isolated and lacking confidence. A possible target for bullying.
Educationally
Difficulties concentrating in class, feeling tired, worried, with no time to do homework.
Financially
Low family income; not having enough money for basic needs
